Has several other negative records for a #1 (worst slam final loss, losses to youngest and oldest player). I think those records will never be broken. All that is clear sign that she didn’t belong there. Under normal circumstances she would have been a solid #2.

That is nonsense. After the stabbing Steffi won 13 of her next 14 tournaments with a 80-1 match win/loss record. Even peak Seles never had such a run. Yes, she was very successful during Steffi‘s slump. But not so much during Steffi’s peak years.

@@seanjames1967 Yes, Steffi had only her 11-best year in 1991 and the 9th-best in 1992 (Seles‘s two best years). So Seles won more slam titles - of course. She was no slouch! But when they played each other Steffi usually won. And when Steffi had her peak years she left Seles in the dust. BTW, the stabbing halted her career for a few months, nothing more.

In mid-99 Hingis had won 5 slams and Serena who was about the same age not even one slam. 5-0 for Hingis but in the end 5-23.

@@carrerau7138 hingis does not have the power game to sustain her dominance. hingis won 5 grand slams during the time when graf was approaching the end part of her career, and seles post stabbing was never the same. she was out of shape and lost her mental toughness. without stabbing graf probably ends her career with 15 grand slams and seles with 15 grand slams. neither one of them have the longevity of serena Williams.

Not much. Before the stabbing Seles was 4-6 win/loss against the GOAT, in the end 5-10.

The main reason was that from the mid-90s Seles had to cope with peak Steffi and with Hingis. Who both simply were better players.

So the evidence indicates more a slight downward trajectory than anything upward. 2) And we know that Steffi‘s form increased a lot in 1993-96 compared to 1991/92. 3) And we also know that Monica‘s beloved dad was diagnosed with cancer in summer 1993 (died in 1998). Which surely is more depressing for a young girl than bad recollections of a stabbing incident. Three strong arguments against Seles having been successful if the stabbing hadn‘t occurred. I never hear anything substantial from Selestial nutters against that.

Steffi career was revived because after the Graf Blackmail Scandal had vanished in Steffi’s rear mirror she made all the top finals again. Which hadn’t been the case in 1990-92. And we all know that Steffi regularly won the important finals in periods in which she reached almost all of them.

From then on a traumatized Steffi slowly dug herself out of her hole, improved, narrowed Seles‘s lead in the WTA ranking substantially, was set to overtake her at the FO 93, improved further, had a 80-2 win/loss record in the 12 months after the stabbing. Seles won only with 86-78 on points played. That was quite narrow. However, Steffi had beaten Seles in 3 of the 4 previous matches. When Seles was #1 she was owned by Steffi, was 2-5 H2H against the GOAT.

Navratilova is the GOAT! Because while she was dominating and putting up those numbers in singles, she was doing the exact same things in doubles. She played double and dominated both. She's the greatest!
